As the Wahine volleyball program's primary
recruiter, Charlie Wade has brought numerous prospects to the
University of Hawai'i. Wade begins his sixth season, and first
as associate head coach.
In addition to his recruiting duties,
Wade also handles film breakdowns, scouting reports and technical
training during practice. He also coordinates one of the most
successful summer camp programs in the country.
"I am really enjoying my time working
with Dave in our attempt to win national championships,"
Wade said. "I am honored to have all the responsibilities
he has entrusted in me. The support of the community and the excitement
they generate are a continual motivation to keep producing championship-caliber
teams."
In 1995, Wade joined the successful
Wahine volleyball program after serving numerous years as a club
coach.
He founded the Magnum Volleyball Club,
regarded by many college coaches as one of the top junior programs
in the country, in 1986. Wade also served as head coach of the
club, which was based in Anaheim, Calif. Among his many rising
stars were Rainbow Wahine standouts Kristal Attwood, Kee Williams,
Sarah Chase, Heather Bown, and current outside hitter Jessica
Sudduth.
It was during this time when Wade got
his first taste of Division I coaching. He spent two years as
an assistant coach at Cal State Fullerton, where he would eventually
earn his bachelor's degree in kinesiology in 1991.
Wade founded the Southern California
Volleyball Institute in 1993, serving as executive director. The
17,000-square-foot volleyball training facility featured four
courts, offices, weight and training rooms, and a pro shop.
"Charlie's recruiting efforts have
really paid dividends to our program as we continue to produce
top quality athletes," Shoji said. "He has continued
to be a major factor in our technical training and developing
of players."
Wade is a 1981 graduate of Warsaw Community
High School in Indiana. After graduating, he attended Long Beach
City College for one year.
Wade is engaged to former Kaiser High
and University of Washington standout Tani Martin. They live
in Honolulu. He is an avid golfer and also enjoys hiking, snorkeling,
and playing beach volleyball.
