The 16th-ranked Rainbow Wahine volleyball
team extended their conference winning streak to 42 matches last weekend
with victories over Rice and Tulsa at the Special Events Arena.
Hawaii improved to 15-4 on the season and a perfect 7-0 in WAC
play.
It took the Wahine a little more than an
hour Thursday to sweep Rice, 15-8, 15-4, 15-5 before a crowd
of 4,533. Therese Crawford led Hawaii to wins in the first two
games with 10 kills. The Wahine finished off the Owls in Game
3 behind four blocks by Lori Garber, who saw her first action
of the year. Hawaii limited Rice (4-15, 1-5 WAC) to a mere .011
hitting percentage in completing their eight consecutive straight-set
victory.
More of the same was expected Saturday against
WAC bottom-dweller Tulsa. However, the Golden Hurricanes (4-21, 0-7
WAC) stunned Hawaii and a crowd of 5,661 by stealing Game 1.
It was the first time in 25 games dating back to Sept. 26 that
Hawaii dropped a game. The Wahine responded though by taking the
next three games for a 13-15, 15-10, 15-3, 15-9 victory. Cia Goods
paced the Wahine with 16 kills and seven blocks. Leah Karratti
added nine kills and seven blocks of her own.
