Freshman Adam Black (Mililani '96) of La Verne College (Calif.) earned the No. 6 ranking in hitting percentage nationally in NCAA Division III and a nickname - Volleyball Head.

The ranking was for his .399 attack percentage; he also ranked 15th in blocking with 1.27 per game. The nickname was for his hairstyle. He got a buzz haircut and bleached a volleyball design into his head, including seams and stiches.

"Sometimes I like to be apart from everyone else," Black said.

Black's statistics came mainly against Division I opponents. His haircut, and his game, stood out so much against Cal State-Northridge that when he moved to transfer there, he was offered a partial scholarship.

But on Tuesday, Northridge dropped volleyball and three other men's sports. "That's a pretty big disappointment," Black said. He is uncertain of his college future, but said it is too expensive to return to La Verne, which does not give athletic scholarships.

Junior Jeff Pang (Mililani '94) was a reserve at La Verne.
