BYU TO HOST HAWAII IN POWERBAR/MPSF MEN’S VOLLEYBALL QUARTERFINAL TOURNAMENT; GLOBAL RADIO BROADCAST THIS SATURDAY EVENING FROM PROVO

PROVO, Utah, April 14, 1997 -- The #3 seed BYU Cougars will host the #6 seed Hawaii Rainbows at the 1997 PowerBar/Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Men’s Volleyball Championship Tournament Quarterfinals, live this Saturday evening, April 19th at 6:00 p.m. PST, 9:00 p.m. EST, across America and around the world, via satellite, on The Cable Radio Network from Brigham Young University’s Smith Fieldhouse.

The PowerBar/MPSF Men’s Volleyball Championship Tournament Quarterfinal match between BYU and Hawaii will also air live throughout the Hawaiian Islands on the Rainbow Sports Radio Network, with flagship 1420AM KCCN, Honolulu.

Olympic sportscaster Jeff Ruffolo will call the play-by-play with Bob McGregor providing the color commentary. PowerBar (www.powerbar.com) is the broadcast title sponsor.

BYU is paced by the 1996 Volleyball Magazine Freshman of the Year Ryan Millar, with outside hitters Steve Hinds, Ingo Lindemann and middle blocker Adam White. In the only regular-season match-up this season on February 1st in Provo, BYU defeated the Rainbows in an eighty-eight minute, three game sweep, 15-8, 15-4, 15-7.

The Rainbows will counter with four senior starters, including setter Curt Vaughan, outside hitter Aaron Wilton and opposite Jason Ring. A third year starter, Hawaii’s junior middle blocker Sivan Leoni has a .441 hitting percentage, which ranks him among the leaders in the nation.
