While I'm in the typing mood, here's Kevin Hashiro's article on Curt Vaughn from the April 11 Ka Leo O Hawai'i. (This is the U.H. student newspaper, which is free but not on the web.) * * * Rainbows' setter Vaughan literally a colorful character -------------------- by Kevin Hashiro Ka Leo Sports Editor -------------------- Purple, green, blue, red and even fuchsia are some of the colors that University of Hawai'i senior setter Curt Vaughan has sported on his hair in the past few years. It has been a hair-raising experience for volleyball fans who come to expect a colorful top every night of competition. Yet he wants to be remembered for more than just the colors of the Rainbow on his follicles. "I hope people do see more than just the color of my hair," the Ventura, Calif. native said. "But I hope they remember me as having fun. That's (what) I hope people get out of the way I played. "I went out, had a good time when I played and enjoyed myself. That's basically what I wanted to do." But as his days as a Rainbow wind down, some of his former teammates have told him what to expect as an ex-player. Most of them told him to just enjoy it to the very end. "When it's over, it's over," Vaughan said. "I think I'm ready for it. I'm ready to move on with my life." But he has yet to really think about what lies on the road ahead. Instead, he's putting his mind on the immediate future. That future holds the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation playoffs next week. "I've got one week for sure, hopefully a couple more weeks," he said. "I'm just gonna try and live those to the fullest and finish my career the best that I can." "Best" is another word for Vaughan, who had the task of replacing first team All-American Erik Pichel at the start of the year. That was no problem for Vaughan, a starter his sophomore season. Despite a difficult midseason, he played well enough to become the Rainbows' all-time assists leader with 4,285 last week, breaking the record of Albert Hannemann. Records aside, when the final point of the season is scored, Vaughan will miss a lot. "Probably just mostly the players and the friendships you get through playing," he said. "The crowds and the fans are great. I'll miss all that."
