Just got back from the Special Events Arena. In fact I'm (half)watching the replay on TV as I'm writing this. The first game was a see-saw battle with the Trojans taking the lead midway through. Kahinu Lee came in for Mason Kuo (who was starting for the ill Aaron Wilton, present only in street clothes). Hawaii managed a run at the end and pulled out a 15-12 victory. In the second game, USC jumped off to a 5-1 lead. Again Lee subbed for Kuo and Hawaii ran off 14 straight and cruised to a 15-5 win. Lee started the third game which played much like the first, with the Trojans holding a slight advantage throughout most of the game. The Rainbows finally caught them late, helped by an apparently bad line call, and came away with the 15-11 victory. The Trojan attack was fairly one-dimensional going time and again to Chris Guigliano in all six rotations. Guigliano wound up with 27 kills hitting about .375. Eric Seiffert was the only other Trojan who was much of a threat adding 15 kills and also hitting about .375. The USC block was ineffective, with both Gugliano and Seifert getting shut out in the block category. The 6-10 Szilard Kovacs did have about 3 blocks but was not a factor offensively. Hawaii hit .451(!), with Ring leading the way with 23 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Milo added a steady 19 kills at .571(!). Tune and Vaughan led the Rainbow blockers with 5 apiece. Tune (.476), Leoni (.385), and POG Lee (.455) all hit for high percentages. There were about 8900 tickets sold with about 7500 in attendance. Saturday is already a sell-out. - mike
