Hawai`i outlasts Lewis to win 3-1: 15-9, 15-6, 9-15, 16-14

Lewis did not get off the ground in games 1 & 2, but came back fired up in
G3 & G4. The Bows kept Rivera under control through the first 3 games only
to see Rivera almost bring Lewis back into the match in G4. Rivera had an
amazing 17 kills in G4 alone and led all attackers with 29 kills on the
evening. So, yes, Lewis' Rivera is all that and more. I suspect that if
Lewis had not been traveling as much as they have that this match would
have been much closer. In the end, Lewis was outgunned and outnumbered by
the Bows and their fans. Attendance on both nights exceeded the entire
school body for Lewis (enrollment at Lewis is about 4,300).

Starters for both teams were the same as last night. Hawai`i: Wilton,
Milo, Vaughan, Leoni, Ring & Tune. Lewis: McBride, Bachorski, Rivera,
Quinones, Simms & Prosek. Very little substitution for Lewis on both
nights -- limited to Casey coming in briefly at times for Simms.

G1: The Bows start off quick and zip to a 3-0 lead. Lewis would tie the
score at 4-4, but allow the Bows to score 5 unanswered points to widen the
gap to 9-4. Lewis would get as close as 11-9 before allowing the Bows to
reach game point at 14-9. Lewis would then hold Hawai`i at bay for 3 game
points before falling on the 4th at 15-9. Leading all attackers in G1 was
Jason Ring for Hawai`i with 9 kills followed by Milo with 5 kills. The
Hawai`i block was also too much for Lewis in G1 with Rick Tune putting up
an impressive 6 blocks. Tune would have a phenomenal 15 block assists and
3 block solos for the evening. Lewis had a balanced attack with 4 hitters
getting 4 kills apiece: Bachorski, Rivera, Quinones & Prosek. Simms had 3
kills.

G2: The Bows would begin this game by embarrassing Lewis with a run of 7
unanswered points. Lewis would manage to score 2 points before the Bows
went on another 6-point run to make it 13-2. Lewis would hold the Bows off
long enough to score 4 more points including an ace by Rivera. However,
Lewis would fall on the Bows' 3rd attempt at game point. For Hawai`i,
Aaron Wilton would elevate his hitting to come up with 8 kills followed by
Tune's 3 kills and 5 blocks. For Lewis, Rivera and Prosek delivered 4
kills each along with Bachorski's 3.

G3: Lewis storms back from the dead to take a 4-0 lead before the Bows
score their 1st point. Lewis would continue to blow the score wide open to
a 10-3 lead. In an attempt to stop Lewis from running away with this game,
Hawai`i coach Mike Wilton replaces Aaron Wilton with Mason Kuo and Rick
Tune with Clay Stanley. Kuo would deliver a few solid serves and a kill.
Stanley turned in 2 blocks and 1 kill. However, it was too little too late
as Lewis takes G3 on their 5th attempt at game point, 15-9. Leading the
Lewis attack in G3 were Bachorski and Prosek with 7 and 6 kills,
respectively. For Hawai`i, Ring and Milo turned in 6 and 4 kills,
respectively. The Hawai`i block cooled off in G3 allowing the Flyers to
break through.

G4: A battle royal. Lewis started off with another stunning run of 5
points. The Bows would close to 5-6. At this point, a Lewis serve sails
out, but Hawai`i is called for illegal overlapping. The argument between
the Hawai`i coaching staff, team captain Naveh Milo and down ref Ernest Ho
drags for almost 5 minutes before it's determined that the call was in
error and it is decided to play the point over. Momentum is broken on the
Hawai`i side and Lewis rushes off to an 8-5 lead. The Bows claw back to
tie the score at 8-8 and never trail again. The Bows manage to jump out to
a 13-9 lead before a series of passing errors brings Lewis to 13-12. The
Bows score a point on Jason Ring's serve to get to their first match point
at 14-12. Lewis sides out repeatedly and manages to tie the score at 14-14
with Rivera almost single-handedly keeping the Bows at bay. The Bows
scored another point on Wilton's serve to bring up the 8th match point.
Lewis holds the Bows off for two more match points on Rivera kills.
Finally, Rivera is rejected on the 10th match point and the Bows win 16-14.
This game was Rivera all the way for Lewis with his 17 kills despite
obvious fatigue. Second best for Lewis was Quinones with 7 kills (14
overall). For the Bows, a balanced attack in this game was too much for
the Flyers. The Bows were led by team captain Naveh Milo's 8 kills,
followed by Ring (7) and Wilton & Tune (6 each). Tune's 6 blocks would
also seal the Flyers' fate.

For the match, attackers were led by Rivera (29 kills); Ring (23); Wilton,
Milo & Prosek (17 each); Bachorski (16); Quinones (14); and Tune (11). All
other attackers were in single digits. In blocking, no one came close to
Hawai`i's Rick Tune. In the end, better blocking and better rest gave the
Bows the edge. The Bows played a solid match and looked as good tonight as
they did against Penn State earlier in the season. In some ways, most
notably serving and blocking, the Bows may have looked better. Lewis
showed what they were capable of in games 3 and 4. Rivera, a sophomore, is
spectacular and will give opponents fits throughout the remainder of this
season and the next two seasons.

As an aside, several Lewis fans gave the Hawai`i crowd a rare treat when
they joined Hawai`i's resident arena jesters in dancing during the time
outs. One Lewis fan's exuberant performance on Friday prompted someone to
make a sign which read "Dance for us Lewis man." Guess some people know
how to party and make themselves at home.
