Pacific hands Hawaii third-straight loss

HONOLULU - No. 8 Pacific rebounded from Saturday's loss to Pepperdine by defeating No. 13 Hawaii, 14-16, 15-13, 15-8, 15-9 on Sunday. Senior middle blocker Addie Hauschild had 19 kills to lead the Tigers, while freshman outside hitter Danielle Shinn added 14 kills, 10 digs and four blocks. Pacific had three game-points before losing game one, but rallied to win game two as sophomore outside hitter Jennica Smith served five straight points after trailing 13-10. The third home loss this season for the Rainbow Wahine equaled their three-year total since moving to the Special Events Arena in 1994.


Nebraska dumps Ohio State to extend streaks

LINCOLN, Neb. - The fifth-ranked Huskers extended a couple of winning streaks with a 15-5, 15-13, 15-11 win over No. 17 Ohio State Saturday night. Nebraska (8-1) won its 39th-straight match at the Nebraska Coliseum, the longest current home-court winning streak in the nation, and won the Arby's Classic for the sixth-straight year, improving to 14-0 in the tournament. Senior outside hitter Lisa Reitsma led the Huskers with 22 kills and was named the tournament MVP. Junior outside hitter Jamie Krondak added 13 kills and 14 digs for Nebraska. Senior outside hitter Vanessa Wouters also had 22 kills for Ohio State (6-3).


Pepperdine pulls off another upset vs. Pacific

HONOLULU - Unranked Pepperdine pulled off its second upset in two days by dropping No. 8 Pacific 6-15, 18-16, 5-15, 16-14, 15-7 in Hawaii. Friday night, the Waves upset No. 13 Hawaii in five games. Senior outside hitter Nicole Sanderson had a match-high 23 kills, while Jamie Hill added 22 for Pepperdine (9-0). Pacific had five players with double-figure kills, led by senior middle blocker Addie Hauschild with 18. Sophomore Sara Bronson and freshman Danielle Shinn, who took over for junior outside hitter Elsa Stegemann who was lost for the season with a knee injury, combined for 19 kills for the Tigers (5-2).


Kendrick wins No. 250 at George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. - George Mason coach Pat Kendrick picked up career win No. 250 with the Patriots' 8-15, 16-14, 15-10, 10-15, 15-8 win over Utah State Saturday night. Kendrick, now in her 13th season at George Mason, has an overall record of 250-169 for a .597 winning percentage. With wins over Maryland-Baltimore County and Utah State, her squad finished second to Auburn at the Patriot Invitational. The Lady Tigers also finished the tournament with a 2-1 record, but had the better record in individual games. Last year, Kendrick led the Patriots to a 26-3 record and a No. 16 ranking in the USATODAY/AVCA Top 25.


Michigan State gets back in the win column

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Michigan State put an end to its two-match losing streak with a 15-8, 15-8, 15-11 win over No. 15 Loyola Marymount Saturday at UC Santa Barbara's Bellomo Classic. Junior outside hitter Jenna Wrobel had a match-high 20 kills for the Spartans, while senior outside hitter Veronica Morales added 10 kills and 11 digs. Senior outside hitter Sarah Noriega had 16 kills to lead the Lions. Michigan State opened the tournament by losing to both South Florida and No. 7 UCSB on Friday.


Florida tops BYU to remain undefeated

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Second-ranked Florida improved to 8-0 with a 15-8, 15-10, 13-15, 16-14 win over No. 10 BYU before a crowd of 3,281 Friday at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center. The Gators appeared to be cruising after the first two games, but the Cougars rallied with 10 straight points to win game three and built a 9-3 lead in game four before came back to seal the win. "Most teams that make a run like BYU did in the third game make some errors, but they never did," UF Head Coach Mary Wise said. "We got back in the match by playing good defense. This was a great experience for our team." Senior middle blocker Nina Foster and junior outside hitter Jenni Keene led the Gators with 18 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Caroline Steuer had 18 kills to lead BYU.


Arkansas shuts down Colorado State

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - No. 24 Arkansas bounced back from last weekend's five-game losses to No. 5 Nebraska and No. 8 Pacific with a 15-12, 15-10, 15-8 win over No. 25 Colorado State Friday night. Senior outside hitter Krystal Osborne led three Lady Razorbacks in double figures with 17 kills, while junior outside hitter Jamie Rhome added 16. Arkansas had a 16-4 advantage in blocks, with junior outside hitter Kim Storey posting eight. Colorado State was led by senior outside hitter Rainie Rogers with a match-high 23 kills and 13 digs.


South Florida upsets Michigan State

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Senior outside hitter Paula Araujo had 17 kills and 14 digs to lead South Florida to a 15-13, 15-7, 15-12 over No. 11 Michigan State at the Bellomo Classic. Junior outside hitter Jenna Wrobel had a match-high 23 kills for the Spartans. USF hit .351 as a team and committed just 10 errors. The Bulls also had 10 service aces and blocked nine shots. Michigan State hit .270, but had 23 hitting and 11 service errors. In other first round action, No. 15 Loyola Marymount swept Arizona State and No. 7 UC Santa Barbara swept Portland State. In the evening session, UCSB handed Michigan State its second loss of the day, 12-15, 15-12, 15-6, 15-44.


Wisconsin to play host to 'final four preview'

MADISON, Wis. - The Badgers play host to the Wisconsin Volleyball Classic on Sept. 19-20 with four of the top 14 teams in the nation participating. The classic pits the Big Ten Conference against the Big Twelve Conference. On Friday, No. 1 Penn State takes on No. 5 Nebraska, and No. 12 Texas faces No. 14 Wisconsin. On Saturday, the Nittany Lions challenge the Longhorns while the Badgers take on the Huskers. "Really what it is is a final four preview," said UW coach John Cook of the Classic. "That was our intention - to make it a final four preview to get people pumped up for 1998 when we host (the NCAA Championship)."


Big West volleyball broadcasts available online

IRVINE, Calif. - The Big West Conference and The Cable Radio Network are teaming up to make Big West volleyball broadcasts available on the internet. Beginning Sept. 26 when Idaho travels to Nevada, 10 regular-season matches, the Big West tournament championship, the NCAA West Regional and the 1997 NCAA Division I final four will be available free of charge. "We are very excited about the exposure this will give to women's volleyball," said Donna Noonan, NCAA Director of Championships. "(It) will certainly enhance our efforts to promote the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball." Olympic sportscaster Jeff Ruffolo will handle the play-by-play, with Mitch Lehman providing the color commentary.


Pacific's Stegemann lost for the season

STOCKTON, Calif. - Junior outside hitter Elsa Stegemann suffered a knee injury near the end of the fifth game in Saturday night's loss at Nebraska and will miss the remainder of the season. Stegemann, who had only been with the Tigers for one week after playing in the World University Games, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee. "Although we will be a different team without Elsa, we feel we are young enough to improve enough to be among the top teams in the month of December," Pacific coach John Dunning said. "We're fortunate to have two who practiced all of fall camp in that position and have performed quite well." Sophomore Sara Bronson and Danielle Shinn will take Stegemann's place in the lineup.


Texas Tech's Martin gets fifth year of eligibility

LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior outside hitter Cristine Martin was granted a fifth year of eligibility by the NCAA on Tuesday. Martin, who underwent two arthroscopic surgeries during her freshman year, had her original petition denied because she played in seven matches that season. "The committee reconsidered Ms. Martin's situation and based upon the information submitted, made a fair decision," said Texas Tech associate athletic director for compliance Bob Burton. Martin, a three-year starter, will play this weekend when Texas Tech (7-0) plays host to the 19th annual Four Points-Sheraton/Red Raider Volleyball Classic Friday and Saturday.


Rankings change, but Top 25 teams stay the same

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Only the rankings changed in the second USA TODAY/AVCA coaches poll. Penn State's second win over Stanford kept the Nittany Lions at the top and dropped the Cardinal to fourth behind Long Beach State. Brigham Young moved up three places to No. 10 after winning nine straight games at the Mizuno Classic. Texas suffered the biggest drop, falling four places to No. 12 after being swept by the Cougars. Arkansas lost five-game matches to No. 5 Nebraska and No. 8 Pacific, but still managed to move up one position to No. 24.


BYU's Gant named player of the week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Amy Steele Gant, BYU's 6-1 middle blocker, was named the AVCA Division I national player of the week after leading the Cougars to wins over No. 18 Washington (3-0), No. 8 Texas (3-0) and Oral Roberts (3-0) at the Mizuno Classic. For the week, Gant hit .432 with 48 kills and averaged 6.0 kpg. In the tournament championship against the Longhorns, she hit .429 with 14 kills, eight digs, six blocks and one ace. "Amy was more consistent this weekend than I've ever seen her be in her career," said Cougars coach Elaine Michaelis. "She had great stats, but the stats don't show how well she served. She was also smart at the net. She has become a very good finesse player to go with her power."
